Sebastien Bertin-Maghit, MSc, PhD

Dr Sebastien Bertin-Maghit was trained in France where he obtained a MSc in biotechnology (with a specialization in health biology and microbiology) and a PhD in Immunology.

He has worked for more than 20 years in biomedical R&D in both academia and the private sector in 5 different countries. Prior to joining CSII, he created two small companies to promote innovation in life sciences and health, in Singapore and Thailand.

Dr Sebastien’s courses deal with the fundamentals of biology and their translation into better therapies, the required skills to develop health-related marketable products and reflections on the necessary integration of new technologies to tackle current and future health challenges.

""""Life is fascinating, I have always wanted to check what was happening behind the curtains, how all the biochemical and biological processes in our body were sustaining this very fragile thing that life is. And after all, what is Health if not the perfectly, orderly, and timely adjusted balance between all these mechanisms?""”

My Courses

Innovation in Health & Wellbeing

This course aims at introducing different technologies and skills that support innovation in Health and Wellbeing.

While science is the necessary core to innovate in Health, there are many non-scientific skills that innovators should master.

In this course, students will learn about the different models of innovation, project management, intellectual property applied to health products, some basics of contracts to be able to set-up collaboration when conducting innovation projects, or to create their own start-up. Students will also be introduced to R&D, the rules and regulations of the industry, ethics and integrity.

After completing of this course, students should understand what it takes to be an innovator in Health and Wellbeing and have some basic skills in several domains, both scientific and not, to be able to drive innovative projects in the field.

Next-Generation Therapies

This course explores the intersection of biology and advanced therapeutic strategies.

Students will gain understanding of fundamental biological principles, their applications in innovative therapies, including gene therapy, immunotherapy, regenerative medicine, and precision medicine. During the course, students will learn about the translation process from fundamental biology to innovative medicine.

After completion of this course, students should have a solid understanding of the bases of life and health, and should be able to understand the mechanistic of the latest therapeutic innovations. This solid knowledge in biology and medical techniques will prepare students for careers in healthcare innovation or further studies in biomedical sciences; it would be a great asset for careers in regulatory environment, management of projects in pharmaceutical industry, administration of hospitals and other health-related business.

Health Challenges & Innovative Solutions

This course explores the most pressing current health challenges and demands students to mobilise their knowledge and do some literature research to propose innovative approaches and solutions for addressing them.

Some innovative solutions will be presented by the teachers and by students, discussions will be conducted to identify their implementations in clinical settings and their limitations. Discussions will be held to imagine possible solutions in the next decades.

Topics include aging, emerging infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, healthcare technologies, and policy considerations.

This course will prepare students for careers in healthcare innovation, but also in public health, or in healthcare policy and regulations.

Unlocking the potential of biotechnologies for health and beyond

This course presents how biotechnologies can bring solutions to modern world issues. With an initial focus on health, biopharmaceuticals, cell, gene, microbiome therapy... The course also introduces biotech-driven innovation in agriculture, food & water security, biomaterials, biofuels and biolubricants.

This course is not the usual professor-to-students lecture. Students are asked to do some research about the topic during the class and the class will organise around the students' interests, with the instructor explaining the science behind such interests.

Decoding the Diet: The Science and Business of What We Eat.

This course provides an in-depth exploration of the complex relationship between diet, health, and wellness. It moves far beyond the simple “eat well, be healthy” motto, to equip students with a critical understanding of nutrition from both theoretical and applied perspectives.
You will gain foundational knowledge of essential nutrients and their functions while examining the impacts of processed foods and the broader agri-food industry on public health. Through a comparative analysis of major global dietary patterns, you will uncover how culture and nutrition intersect to shape health outcomes. The course integrates practical, hands-on sessions where you will perform nutrient analyses, develop innovative recipes, and master food safety practices Yes, you will cook and bake in this course.
Ultimately, students will emerge with the ability to critically evaluate nutritional information, design balanced products and meal plans , and appreciate the intricate links between diet, health, and sustainability. This course will empower you to make informed decisions and identify new opportunities in the ever-evolving world of food and wellness.
